From Crumbling Pastries to Forever: Jane’s Recipe Inspirations

Baking has always been a source of joy and creativity for me. But since meeting Freddie, it’s taken on a whole new meaning. Our love story is filled with adventures, both historical and culinary, and those adventures often find their way into my baking.

One of the most special recipes I’ve recreated is for Queen Elizabeth I’s Spiced Shortbread. We stumbled upon this recipe while exploring a dusty old cookbook at the London Metropolitan Archives. The faded ink and handwritten notes whispered of a bygone era, and I was instantly captivated. The recipe itself was quite simple, calling for ingredients readily available during the Elizabethan period โ€“ butter, sugar, flour, and a delightful mix of warming spices.

But what truly sparked my imagination was the story behind the recipe. We envisioned Queen Elizabeth herself enjoying these crumbly treats, perhaps during a quiet moment of reflection or amidst a lively court gathering.

Recreating this recipe was a labor of love. We spent hours deciphering the faded measurements and sourcing the finest ingredients. The first attempt wasn’t perfect, but with each try, the flavors came alive. The buttery aroma mingled with the warm spices, transporting us back to a time of grand castles and elaborate feasts.

These Spiced Shortbread cookies hold a special place in our hearts. They represent not only my passion for baking but also the joy of discovery and shared experiences that have become the foundation of our love story.
